Artist Chat

Well, that was exciting; a guest spot on #ArtistChat with @SharonNicholas of @ArtistChat on Twitter.

All those pertinent short questions got me thinking. Where am I headed with my art?

If art starts at birth, with all-encompassing perception, and then builds into skills of movement , sound, and creating an effect on the world around us with our hands, or our voice, or a simple move of the eye, then where does school fit in, and the structured learning of what others have done before us?

How does the entirely new scene of art publishing fit in?

Everything can be published non-traditionally now, in some means, shape or form. Video captures dance, kinetic sculpture, and open mic poetry… Paintings, photographs, and music clips can be uploaded for the world to see on a blog, and the artist is accessible to chat with in real-time.

I didn’t discuss my colouring book art at all, and I have a large gap before I started posting art to my blog, where I mostly spent my energy on raising a family. Sculpture and moving pictures with sound, poems, and dance… Photography and paint, and digital art. There is so much I want to do, and combine.

The colouring book art is a start – it has put me into a regular daily routine, and has pulled me into a tonne of learning. Such as different graphics programs, social media, blogging, and small business start-up. And now sales skills… online marketing. publicity, advertising, campaigns, google rankings, and tax treaties. So much to learn.

For now, I will drift off to sleep to the sound of rain drumming on a tin roof. Night all!

Best news about e-books!

I am stoked! This is what I learned today from the experts of Kindle…

“Although the Amazon Kindle does not have any printing functionality, a user can copy pages to “My Clippings”, copy them to their desktop computer by using the USB cable, and then print from there.”

This means that my colouring book artwork can be printed out from an e-book that I can sell on Amazon. Time to get busy!

Hmm. A double-check… does anyone have an Amazon Kindle that they can test this out on and tell us how well it works? It is apparently good for printing out a recipe to use in the kitchen, too.

Thanks!

Colouring books

~ an update ~

The last four days have been quite intense. I have a system for uploading colourful and colouring artwork for sale. (At wildersoul.wordpress.com) The mix of black and white, with colour in some of my previews appeals to me, and I have a feeling that this colouring book style is going to affect my paintings… Everything is set up for me to start painting.

The plan is to take Friday off from the usual routine, and spend some time perhaps painting, and following Job Leads. Or self-employed Artist leads… The blog may be updated with the next letter of the alphabet, U.

It seems like no problem at all to carry on producing a colouring book pic every day. Each one is hand-drawn and I think of it as my Artist’s Sketchpad. A place to show sketches that may turn into paintings.

The pain in my left shoulder/neck has disappeared. And some Playground Therapy yesterday did me a world of good. The stress had started to build up, and going for a really high swing helped to defuse it, and I found I could breathe properly again. Then a few slides down the bumpy slide for kids a lot younger than I, and I could giggle again… and again…

I highly recommend Playground Therapy.

It also does wonders for the self-esteem. Nothing like hearing you’re amazing, from the mouths of babes. I wonder how high they will attempt to swing tomorrow!

That’s the physiological de-stress. Here’s my mental de-stress technique: If I am pressured to desert my kids with the threat of losing half of our current income, then I will go bush. This is my mental “escape hatch.” It is my way of accepting the worst that could happen, and be totally prepared to face it. An interesting novel caught my eye, which has a colourful description of the slums of India. Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. People made their dwellings out of whatever was on hand. And there was a huge community all living together in the same conditions. The “happiness” is found in everyone being in similar circumstances. It is harder living poor in among the rich. I remember Gandhi wearing his large white sheet, and it didn’t matter where he went, or what dignitaries he met with, he wore what he wore. A man in uniform asked him if he felt underdressed for the occasion. To which Gandhi asked if the heavily decorated and uniformed man felt overdressed.

Full steam ahead. I want to be earning at least some money from my colouring book, and other art, within the next two weeks. Then I have an appointment where I will need to bring evidence of the work and learning I have put in towards setting up this online business. As well as, at the same time, showing that I am looking for any suitable/appropriate work available.

That means writing a CV. I will post it, and link to it on all my blogs. And I will think up a list of things I could possibly offer to do for others for money. Sounds serious doesn’t it! I am required to be working part-time, or in some sort of approved training course, in addition to homeschooling. I am working and learning. The only missing ingredient is the money. Any tips are much appreciated.

I have been told that doubling my price and offering different ‘levels’ of product could work. My introductory prices for September are to get the ball rolling, and make sure that my system works. I intend to aim next for the Fine Art – Digital Art market, and get serious about painting. While retaining the colouring book theme, and the therapeutic angle. I have some leads for places to display or promote my work.

That’s my life update on colouring books for tonight. It’s been a long day. Hope you enjoy the splash of colour at the Wildersoul Colouring Book.

I’ve done enough for a mallow puff!

Although I am running late, I am now catching up fast!! My first fifteen contacts have been invited to have a look at my 365+ colouring pictures at http://sbx.sk/AkD1.

And I have a special bookmark folder for other organizations that may love my colouring book. Especially how it can be printed out offline, any time, as many times as you wish.

I am loving it – I am on a bit of a high from having something to sell that I believe in.

Part of me wants to next 75 invites which will bring me up to date on my goal of 1000 for the month of September, with 15 contacts each morning, and 15 each afternoon. So I may pull an all-nighter. Bit of weigh-up on how much sleep I can miss!

Now I really do want a mallow-puff!

(PS – Shaquin helped me squash the 143MB into a mere 100MB. Yay!)

Brainstorming – colouring book

Anything goes here, and any extra ideas are very welcome to throw into the mix. I need to shake my brain out a bit.

(Edit: This helped. The downheartedness is departing and the hopefulness is setting in once more. I recommend brainstorming to anyone pushing through a business idea)

—-BrAiN-STorMinG—

143MB file download takes maybe four hours or more on dial-up connections. That’s for 458 PNG files that are compressed into a single zipfile.

Some people do not have an internet connection at all.

Everyone who has a high speed internet connection with plenty of bandwidth, can already access my FREE online colouring book. Which is good…. although perhaps these are the people who are more able to afford a $12 subscription, than those with dial-up, or no internet at all. (?)

Colouring in is healing in itself, as it accesses the creative side of the brain.

Using the colouring as a means of expression, or as something to accompany a course of therapy really requires at least one other person to share the process with. This could be a friend, family member, therapist or counsellor, or similar. Someone to share the journey with and ‘be there’ when things get rough.

Online support groups, for colouring in. Share work, or share a story, or simply gather together with a creative bunch. Have fun!

Meet at a cafe and bring a bunch of colouring pics to share, along with some coloured pencils or crayons, and sharpeners. Forget about the rest of the world for a while.

Meet at a community art centre and start a colouring group for $x per session per person per week.

$180-ish per week, would be perhaps 2 days, with 2 sessions of four or five people per session. 9 people x $10 x 2 days

Would people pay that much to colour in?

Is there community funding available for a colouring project which aims to provide a healthy creative activity open to the whole community?

Hmm. 4 days, with 2 sessions of four or five people. 18 people x $5 x 4 days.

You know, anybody could do this, by printing off colouring book pages from my blog, and set up a venue, or go into schools, rest homes, mental health hospitals, or units within hospitals, to provide some colourful company to others. Whether as paid work, or as voluntary companionship.

I wonder if there is a grant available for one artist to work part-time on providing a free online colouring book to the global community via the internet…. Equivalent of 15 hrs a week at minimum wage is about $10,140. I might go down this avenue.

Schools are a big market…

Businesses apparently can now be sued for causing stress to their employees in the workplace. (Thank you mum for this idea…) Put colouring books into stressful offices to provide a quick time-out to de-stress, and engage the creative brain, before returning to the fray in a corporate environment.

(Schools and corporations do not appeal to me quite so much as our values are quite different.)

Perhaps if other people were to find these ideas useful to start their own business, then they could send a small commission for the use of the artwork. Like maybe 5% or 10%. You get 90% to 95% of whatever you are paid.

I have limitations and have to find a way to work around them.

So far the most suitable option for me, seems to be applying for a grant to work part-time as an artist providing a Creative Space, and ‘health resource.’  As well as asking for a small commission (royalty?) from others who may really be able to go out regularly and be with people face to face, and create a physical space where people can meet and colour in together.

Possibly, I could burn CDs or DVDs with 365+ colouring book pictures, and sell them for the $12. Plus postage.

143MB for 458 files might take up to half an hour to download, for high speed internet, with good bandwidth. For some it would be a lot quicker.  This would still be quicker than going through each blog post to download each picture individually. Once on your own computer, there is software available to preview all the pictures either in a file manager, or photo viewer.

Paper version. Needs to really be at a higher resolution for print, and a non-standard paper or binding used, which means paying a bit extra to self-publish. I am short of funds for paying the extra.  Increasing the size would be desirable, and this means editing every single image file. This would take quite some time.

I am convincing myself at this point to go ahead and offer the $12 download of 365+ files, as it has ongoing benefits that perhaps outweigh the time it takes to download. (I am used to downloading single files which take a second or a few seconds, or at most a number of short minutes to arrive on to my computer.) It would need to be treated as a large creative resource which will take more than an “instant” to arrive.

Okay. I will start writing my introductory offer, and load the large zipfile to my DropBox/Sellbox/PayPal machine. Ready to do business.

When I come back, I will search for the info I have already written for a short bio, and on my business plan, and in the profile I wrote up for Project O, at Harsh Reality.

Time Management

Righto… If I want to earn $10,140 (ish) for the year, and I need to show some sort of results in one month, then this is how time fits in to the plan.

I am offering a colouring book of 365+ pictures for $12.

Which is enough to colour one picture every day for a year, and includes access to colouring pictures on the blog for all of 2013.

(If you would like one, please email wildersoul@gmail.com to let me know! )

It will be instantly downloadable, so people can print it forever from their computer without having to spend on internet access every time they search for a picture to colour in. Also, if they are a hospital or a therapist, or a community art group, then they can print as many copies of the colouring pictures as they like, for the group of people in their care.

So… I aim to send invitations to 1000 different organisations, or people, during the month of September. Seems like a big number, so I broke it down.

That’s 30 invitations each day for 30 days. (I am rounding it for ease of calculation). Comes to 900, and that’s okay, because $12 x 1000 is $12,000.

Because that still sounds like a lot to me, who is a bit of a hermit when it comes to approaching people, I broke it down a bit further.

15 contacts in the morning, and 15 contacts in the evening,

for the 30 days of September.

And that’s the plan. I hunted through the Yellow Pages, and White Pages, and have the first two days of invites written up to start tomorrow. One page for each set of 15 contacts. Although, I may simply take all the broad categories of people, and send invitations via the internet to similar groups online, rather than local. (This is because a lot of the “local” ones are outside my free calling area by phone). I’ll try a combination of both local and online.

Next step is to zip up all the files. I am not going to reformat them, although in future, I have a system in place that provides both US Letter and A4 size files. That means the next set of 365+ pictures will be bigger than this first introductory set.

After that, it’s time to set up one page that I can link to for my potential customers to visit when they receive their invitation. It might be a Sellbox page – I thought of that just now. I will think carefully about what words to use, and how to present it. Hopefully it will be perfect to keep in place for the rest of the year, for anyone interested in having a copy of the Wildersoul Colouring Book that prints out offline, and you can search through without having to enter and exit blog posts.

Now I am interested in how big the zip file will be! Hopefully not an unmanageable size. I could always break it into smaller sizes. We’ll see.

Once it is all ready, I would invite and encourage you all to spread the word to anyone, whether adults or children who enjoy colouring in for no particular reason, or anyone interested in the therapeutic side of colouring in.

These are the broad categories of people or organisations that I will be approaching:

  • Mental health service providers and users, including:
  • Counsellors
  • Therapists
  • Psychologists
  • Hospitals
  • Disability service providers and users, inlcuding:
  • Physical disabilities
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Addictions, including:
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Prisons
  • Restorative Justice
  • Victim Support
  • Older Persons, including:
  • Rest Homes
  • Retirement Villages
  • Activities directors
  • Alzheimers
  • Hospice
  • ADHD
  • Brain Injury
  • Sexual assault
  • Adoption
  • Foster Care
  • Community services
  • Social Development – Ministry or services, including:
  • Child Youth and Family services
  • Family and Community
  • Older Persons
  • Disability

My means to reach people will be by email or phone locally, and online via WordPress blogs, Twitter groups, About.me profiles, Linked In groups, Facebook family and friends, Google Plus somehow – I am not too familiar with it yet.

I am hoping to publish my business plan sometime tomorrow too.

Time management isn’t a rigid and strict thing to me, it is a way of organising my mind so as not to be overwhelmed, while achieving goals that I set for myself. I had a bit of a sleep this afternoon to catch up, and now a bit of night shift to get my plan on to the blog. I used to do this for work when I was pregnant. I would sometimes drive in to work at 2am to get things done, when unable come in during the day. Flexibility works well for me. It makes best use of my available energy. I am off to get some sleep now. G’night!

Scribbling furiously, caught on vid!

I scribbled this riverscape some time ago, and sped up this portion of it which strained my basic edition video editor. I have passed the rest of the clips to a superior video editor to turn into a short video clip. Short and Fast!

Here is the very beginning.  It could do with being even faster…

(And no, I don’t really draw this fast!)

~.~

While thinking up youtube tags to add, I found this video on Creative Expression. Take a look if you have the time, it links creativity with health.

Creativity doesn’t have to mean drawing pictures…

Home in Rainbows – Full of Colour!

I’ve started colouring my own artwork, and decided to keep on with it.  I’ll load them here to start with, and also invite you all to visit Art Is The Cure at http://www.artisthecure.com/ where many other artists, poets and all sorts of creative types gather with a focus on the healing aspect of the arts. I’ve set up a profile there with this pic uploaded for starters. More to follow.

rainbow houses cropped 600x444 300dpi home in rainbows

I hope that seeing these pics coloured in provides inspiration.  I will keep them off the colouring book part of my blog, as I believe that the colouring is personal, and I like that you can zoom through and choose a black and white pic that catches your eye.  It is a starting point, and the real creativity happens when you pick up your own pencil or crayon and courage to mark the page, or your mind fills with poetry… or gives birth to a song, or a movie!  Let loose and let the creativity flow 🙂

Happy Colouring to you!
